Flannery!

Here's something you won't hear every day. Flannery O'Connor, a year before her death at 39 from Lupus disease, gave a lecture at Notre Dame. It consisted of a short talk on some aspects of the grotesque in southern fiction (along with some insightful remarks on what it means to be a Catholic writer) and a reading of her short story A Good Man Is Hard To Find. I went looking for a recording of the talk, and found that the only place it was available was if you ordered a copy from ND's archives, which was way too expensive. After a bit of researching, I found an obscure internet radio station that had obtained a copy and had broadcasted it a while back. I streamed the radio episode from their website with Realplayer, recorded the lecture with an audio capture program, converted the .wav file to .wma (mp3 was too lossy) and uploaded it to the internet.

Anyway, for those of you interested, here's The Morning Oil exclusive of one of Catholicism's best writers ever reading her own work (you've got to love that accent).

Note: The files have been re-uploaded as of January 15, 2010

2. A Good Man is Hard to Find

Also, check out the recording of Chesterton here.

This made my day, maybe my year! I don't know how I thought Flannery O'Connor would sound, but like so many of her stories, even her voice surprised me. Soft, light, feminine, and a little bit nasal, with an "Old South" accent clearly from what people in north Georgia refer to as "below the gnat line," dropped R's and all. Very antebellum. An old woman in our church who had been Miss Macon of 1946 sounded exactly like her.

Before Miss Macon of 1946 died a few years back she had begun coming to church without her teeth on occasion, something even the grandmother Flannery's story would not have been caught dead doing.

You deserve some kind of blog award in perpetuity from grateful O'Connor readers everywhere.

That last commenter sorta said it all... nosejennifer indeed.

But to add to the more coherent comments above, thank you very much for posting these. They are on the new Criterion edition of Wise Blood and I was hoping to find copies on the web somewhere. The introductory remarks are particularly wonderful.

I'm not sure what the commenter above this one is trying to say, but I think I agree. ;-)

I don't think I've ever seen so many spammy links in one blog comment. He must be so proud!

Savefile.com seems to be dead. I know it's over a year after you posted this, but I wonder if you might consider re-uploading the files to another service such as sharebee.com or something. Thank you in advance.
